5 applicants hired on the spot

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), has always tied up with the Department of Education in launching various job fairs for graduating Senior High School students in Davao City. This year, DOLE, in collaboration with PESO and Davao City National High School (DCNHS), launched an online job fair to continue the cycle of employment among students despite the current health crisis.

“Doing an online job fair is difficult but we want to make it successful,” Orga Te, the guidance counselor in the Senior High School Department, said.

Te was thankful that the PESO had assisted her in finding participating companies for the job fair. The 11 participating companies were 3ME Manpower Services, Beawesome, Inc. (Awesome Os), Concentrix Services Corporation, Golden Arches Development Corp. (McDonald’s), Great Bomi Seafood, Inc., MSIA Employees Development Cooperative (Medc), Ph Global Jet Express, Inc., Six Eleven Global Services & Solutions, Inc., Supervalue, Inc. (Sm Supermarket), Vicente T. Lao Construction, and Vxi Global Holdings B.V. (Philippines).

Te also said the job fair was a success because of a structured system composed of the technical team headed by Mon Ladica and Annabel Ornopia of Senior High School, plus the team of the hardworking Grade 12 advisers.

The technical team had created a Google Form for DCNHS Grade 12 students and alumni to apply in the companies they are interested to work for. Once this was done, the Grade 12 advisers created the Facebook Group Chat with the student applicants and the company representatives. From the created group chat, the advisers would help facilitate the Messenger call of each applicant to the employer.

On the day of the job fair, the company representatives were welcomed in the DCNHS computer laboratory where they were provided with internet connection and free meals. With all the preparations of the DCNHS team and the participating companies, Dinah Oani, the Grade 12 curriculum head, considered the job fair a success.

“Everyone worked hard and worked together,” she declared.

When asked about the biggest struggle during the online job fair, Te shared that communication barriers were one of the biggest hurdles.

“Because all communication was done online, there are some lapses in comprehending instructions,” Te said. However, she added that these are just minor setbacks to the whole activity.
The 3ME Manpower Services had interviewed 28 out of 38 applicants, out of which, 22 applicants were qualified for final interview.
